Turning steps into ongoing donations for the charities
EVERYSTYEP

Client | Danske Bank
Everystep is a way for people to support good causes by being active. The application makes it fun for you to keep moving, and at the same time, you can easily support charity projects that you like. All you have to do is keep staying active, and the platform will donate money on your behalf. With every step you take, you will make a positive impact on the world.
Challenge
Danske Bank has challenged us to create an IoT solution within one of the three main areas: Smart City, Smart Self and Smart Living. For this project they also provided us with a model of creating value for the user: Be better, Do better, Look better, Feel better.
Charity Runs
Our team took the point of departure in charity runs, where people come together to run for a particular cause. This type of activity utilises the entire model presented by Danske Bank. The challenge for us was to investigate how the value created by charity runs can be turned into a digital experience using the technological possibilities provided by IoT.
Research
To begin with, we mapped out the ecosystem (Rowland et al., 2015) of charity runs. In the area of being active, we discovered that the main actors in relation to the citizen are friends, who have a great impact on our daily life, as well as: runners, athletes, charities, sports events, and different sports disciplines.
To better understand the relationships between charities, donators and companies our team has worked with several research methods. We conducted an online survey, open-ended interviews with charities, iterative prototyping and usability testing (Goodman, Kuniavsky and Moed, 2012).

Insights
-
Among the people who don't support charities, one of the main doubts was whether their donation will go to supporting the actual cause
-
The feeling of familiarity and security with the organisation plays an important role when deciding to support.
-
If people can’t clearly see the impact of their donation, they will be more reluctant towards supporting an organisation.
Those insights raised our awareness about the issue of “feeling safe” while donating money. Potential users must be well informed and feel a connection to the charities. Knowing that our team has put extra focus during user interface design of Everystep. We wanted to provide the user with all the essential information to create a feeling of trust.
Process
While working with this concept, our team identified different types of users. Insights gathered during research and concept development helped us in clarifying those archetypes (Hanigton and Martin, 2012) and identifying their needs. By formulating the archetypes, we ourselves got closer to the user, which helped us understand and empathise with them.
For prioritising the features we used MoSCoW technique (Carroll and Morris, 2015). While prioritizing different features, we looked at them from the perspective of our user needs, which we have formulated by creating user Archetypes. Additionally, we took into account the business model narrative (Bock and George, 2018) to meet the business perspective.
After creating the ecology map (Rowland et al., 2015) to specify the interactions occurring while interacting with the Prototype we conducted usability testing. Throughout the tests, we have gathered feedback from users both on usability issues and the specific features of Everystep.
